Dear Journey,
One of the biggest changes we’ve experienced in moving to Florida is the number of thunderstorms. This week, lightning struck a tree just a few houses down, splitting it in two. I love the way a great storm can make the house shake and rattle. I’m not sure my wife and daughter appreciate it as much as I do! Even as I write this today, there’s thunder rolling in the background.
When we started studying Hebrews, we mentioned how often the writer likes to quote the Old Testament. Last week, in Hebrews chapter 10, he quoted Jeremiah 31. I hit the pause button today and read part of that chapter. I was struck by another passage just a few verses later. Jeremiah 31:35 says,
“Thus says the Lord, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar, the Lord of hosts is his name.”
The God we serve controls the sun and the moon and the stars. He is over the oceans and the waves. I was reminded again that the storms obey His commands. Every thunderstorm is a reminder that Jesus is in control. While they may rattle the house, they answer to our King. He is in control, and He is more powerful than the things that often frighten us. This week, when the next storm hits, take a moment to pray to the God of creation. The same God who the storms obey has invited you into His throne room!
This week, we’ll continue our study of Hebrews as we dive into chapters 9 and 10. I hope you’re enjoying the series and studying alongside us! I can’t wait for what God has in store for us next!
